Sound: A Critical Ingredient for Self-Care

Updated: Jul 10

Sound isn’t just something we hear. It’s something we feel in the body—something that transforms us, affects us, and moves through us in ways that can have a profound effect on our emotions. And when sound is used for self-care, it becomes a powerful tool for emotional reprieve and rejuvenation.

WE ARE MOSTLY WATER
WE ARE MOSTLY WATER

From a scientific perspective, the human body is composed of around 70% water—and sound travels through water over four times faster than through air. That means sound doesn’t just roll over us—it moves through us, influencing cells, tissues, and systems along the way.

If you’ve ever seen cymatics, you’ve witnessed how sound literally shapes matter. These are the experiments where sound frequencies form intricate geometric patterns in sand or water. It’s visual proof that sound isn’t passive—it organizes and influences whatever it touches.

The Chakras: A Map for Emotional Release

This concept of sound moving through the body is mirrored in ancient chakra healing traditions. The body is seen not only as a physical being made up of skin and bone, but it is also seen as energy system made up of chakras. We actually have hundreds of chakras but typically seven major chakras are studied. Each one is associated with specific sound frequencies, colors, locations and emotional states.

Why We Offer Crystal Singing Bowls

We believe healing should be immediate, accessible, effective, and cost effective. That’s why we offer crystal singing bowls—not just as beautiful instruments, but also as self-care tools and sound treatments that provide genuine relief whenever we feel stuck.

By playing the corresponding notes when singing the crystal bowls, we help clear these energy centers strategically by using sound to gently move and rebalance emotions (which are pure energy) that may have become stuck or stagnant.

Usually, within a few seconds of playing the bowls, something shifts, and all you need to do is just listen. Paying attention to the sound of the bowls and listening to the sound until it ends (which can take quite a while sometimes) transforms this self-care experience into an active listening meditation. Just a few moments of playing bowls can facilitate instant relief, relaxation, and rejuvenation and open up space in a very crowded mind for new insight and inspiration to come to us.

A Personal Note: My Practice with Sound

I own a personal set of crystal singing bowls where I've included several bowls for chakras that may be less well known, but crucial for my spiritual journey. Currently I am using an F# Higher Heart Chakra bowl for self-love and self-respect, and a G# Zeal Point Chakra bowl for helping me to excel as my bestest self, who I was really meant to be, and for anyone interested in these I will be offering them as part of the Fae, Flower & Stone offering.

Anyway, no matter what bowls I'm working with my practice always starts at the Root Chakra and then to and through the Crown Chakra, as this follows the natural flow of energy through the body. I play each bowl one at a time, giving it space to fully sing out - meaning I wait for the sound to subside completely before moving on to the next. Each time I do this I instantly become more relaxed, and feel both my physical tension and emotional stress release.

What's great about this type of self-care is that this process actually becomes an active listening meditation, because when my attention is fully focused on the sound of the bowl, how it moves around the room and then the silence that follows - I move into a deeper state of mindfulness and awareness through hearing the sound. It’s grounding, and it’s elevating. For me this is meditation made comfortable, quick and easy - just how I like it.

I hope you will give these bowls a try. If you come visit me in person at a self-care workshop or the Farmer's Markets starting in fall when it cools down here in AZ I will show you how to sing bowls and develop a process that works for you and your lifestyle.
